Save Our Mangroves Now II!

SOMN II

Goal

To reverse the ongoing loss of critically important mangrove habitat through fostering a global commitment from international to national scales to increase the engagement for restoration, conservation and sustainable use of mangroves in order to mitigate and adapt to climate change, protect biodiversity, and increase human wellbeing of the most vulnerable coastal people.

Specific Objective

National governments in the WIO region contribute to spearhead regional mangrove conservation through better integration of mangrove conservation management measures in their national development planning, thus fulfilling international commitments.

Outputs/Activities

  • Output 1: 8+ policy-makers (as part of at least 30 targeted in the region) with key roles in national development planning in Mozambique and Kenya (respectively) have improved awareness, understanding and skills in policy and management approaches fostering mangrove conservation in the WIO region;
  • Output 2: 1+ national policy or development plan in Kenya and Mozambique (respectively) has been improved to better address mangroves;
  • Output 3: Mangrove-related concerns are reflected in 1+ international commitment (e.g. NDCs, NBSAPs, Post-2020 commitments) in Kenya and Mozambique;
  • Output 4: Contribute and support the development of 1 regional mangrove vision. This activity will be led by WWF in the WIO region.

Result Areas

  • WIO countries pledge increased commitments (NDCs, VCs, Bonn Challenge, WIO GLISPA Challenge) on mangrove conservation and identify means of implementation by 2022;
  • The pilot region Western Indian Ocean is on the way to achieve a net zero loss rate of mangroves by 2030 (trend set by 2022);
